For years I have studied the masters who seemed to have it all – success, good family lives, excellent health, exciting lives, unbridled joy. I have studied their methods, their strategies, and as Tony Robbins recommends, modeled their behaviors.

At times in my life, I experienced extraordinary success; and during those times, it seemed almost effortless. I have also experienced times when nothing seemed to work, when everything was effort, and when I frankly felt like the dreams I had were simply figments of my imagination.

During the “down times,” I went back to the drawing board, reading and studying everything I could find about what must be the missing piece of the puzzle. Clearly, I had experienced success on many occasions, both personally and professionally, so what was wrong now? What was I not doing? What did I need to change? The obvious question was, “If I’d had success a few times, surely I had the success mindset, no?”

Big Secret: A success mindset is an “inside job” that you must work on moment to moment, thought by thought. To have a success mindset for life is a lifetime commitment. Consider your mind your “mental gym,” and just like a physical gym you attend to work out your muscles, it requires your attendance on a regular basis for consistent and increased results. When I’d quit working on my “inner thoughts,” the success vanished and was replaced by a series of struggles and losses.

So how do you develop and sustain the mindset for success? Allow me to share some stories with you and then some information and techniques I have found to help you create the mindset that will create the life you desire.

But first, I have a gift for you. This gift was given to me many years ago by a friend, Marie Barcus. Marie was the widow of a Duke University Paranormal Researcher, and she was a fascinating woman I’d met at a local spa. We were having dinner and I guess my tone was negative about something. Marie interrupted me and told me this story.

Marie herself was in her home and was complaining about something she’d seen on the news to her husband Len. Len stopped her and said: “Marie, if someone came to the front door of our home and walked into the living room and dumped a bucket of dirt on the floor, would that be ok with you?”

Marie replied, “Of course not.”

“Well, then,” Len responded, “Why do you let someone put dirt into hour mind? Marie, I’m going to give you a gift. I’m going to give you a Porter to stand at the door of your mind. I want you to imagine your Porter standing there, and whenever a negative thought tries to enter, just see your Porter putting his hand up and forbidding that thought entrance into your mind. ”

Marie smiled as she told me the story. She said that for years afterward, whenever a negative thought would try to enter her conversation with her husband Len, he would simply look at her and softly remind her: “Marie, stand Porter at your door.”

I consider that experience one of the greatest lessons of my life. I had no idea then just how powerful our thoughts were, nor did I even know that I could actively monitor them, but now more than 25 years later, with the advent of quantum physics, and the knowledge we have from science and spirituality, clearly our thoughts and emotions are part of how we create our reality and the big key is: We Are In Control.

So what are the best ways to build and sustain a “success mindset?” Here are some

techniques and behaviors that will help you.

1. First, start by listening to your thoughts and words. To build a success mindset, you need to know what must be upgraded in your mental library. The biggest obstacle to a success mindset has everything to do with consciousness, beliefs, and even subconscious programming that you aren’t aware of.

2. Become aware of the beliefs that may be driving you. Here is one technique. On a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle. On the left side, write out an affirmation such as “I am very rich now.” On the right side of the line, immediately without censoring what you write, write your responses.

They might look something like this:

I’ll never be rich, who am I kidding?

I can’t be rich and spiritual. I choose spiritual.

Some people are destined to be rich; I’m not one of them.

Rich people are superficial – I don’t want to be like that.

I just don’t have what it takes to be wealthy.

I’m not smart, educated, motivated, intelligent enough.

3. After identifying your limiting beliefs, work on them one by one to reprogram more desirable beliefs. Each time you catch yourself thinking one of these limiting thoughts, challenge it head on and replace it.

Example: I’ll never be rich, who am I kidding?

Replacement: There is no reason I cannot be wealthy. People from all walks of life have become very wealthy. There is no Universal Rule that says I cannot be one of them. Of course, I can be wealthy. I just need to start researching the best ways to do that.

“Poverty is not an absence of money and things-it is a mindset. Prosperity is not an abundance of money and things-it’s also a mindset.” Randy Gage

4. How do you reprogram effectively? As I studied the ones I deemed successful, I noticed that many of them had re-programmed themselves by using psycho-cybernetics techniques. Dan Kennedy, one of the world’s most powerful marketers and trainers, used to stutter and was held back by it. He took psycho-cybernetics, and as he says “re-engineered my self esteem.” Now he is a multi-millionaire that helps others become multi-millionaires. He also has a rich personal life, a love of race horses, and travels the world to speak in front of hundreds of thousands.

Psycho-cybernetics helps you reprogram your thoughts for success – both from the conscious level of mind and the deeper, subconscious levels of mind. As you will read below, when you program from the deeper levels of mind, your results are faster and far more effective.

5. Learn to meditate. It is estimated that programming from the deep levels of mind that you reach in deep meditation or hypnosis, can be as much as 100 times more powerful than programming from the conscious level of mind. Learn to meditate and then learn to program your new beliefs and desires from those deeper, more serene levels of mind.

6. Program your conscious and subconscious minds with visuals: 3X5 cards, vision boards, positive images. Jack Canfield of Chicken Soup for the Soul fame is now a multi-multi-millionaire (that’s right – two multi’s.) He still uses visuals to program his mind on a regular basis. What’s good enough for him is good enough for me!

A personal story. How 3X5 cards took his business from $300,000 to $18 million. My friend Dennis is a Realtor in Denver. I met him 30 years ago when he was a new Realtor and I was new loan officer. Average home prices back then were $18,000 (now that dates me doesn’t it?) At any rate, the first day I met Dennis, I noticed a 3X5 card under the glass top on his desk with this written on it: $300,000. I asked him what that was for, and he said, “That’s how much real estate I want to sell my first year.” (Of course, based on prices then, that would equate to approximately 17 houses or 1 ½ homes a month.)

Now Dennis does not believe in anything mystical, so all he did was place the card there so his subconscious mind could see it and then go to work on making that reality happen.

Last year, almost 30 years later, I went into Dennis’s office and his 3X5 card under the glass top on his desk had this amount on it $18 million. And he exceeded that! The power of programming your subconscious mind daily with visuals is very powerful!

7. BIG ONE. Get into the company of folks that are higher up the food chain than you are. Listen to how they think, get into their energy, watch their responses to circumstances. Now you might not understand the concept of “energy,” but we now know from science that this is a Universe of vibrations.

When you are in the vibrational fields of successful people, you are in sympathetic resonance with them, and your vibrations will escalate. That is why so many successful people have regular master mind groups – so they help each other continue to grow.

In Itzhak Bentov’s book, “Stalking the Wild Pendulum,” he describes an experiment with grandfather clocks. Two clocks are placed in the same room, their pendulums out of sync. Within a couple of days, their pendulums are swinging in perfect harmony! More exciting, as each new grandfather clock is brought into the room, the pendulums all synchronize in hours, not days!

It is said that you will become the sum total of the five people you spend the most time with. Look around. Is that enough? If not, upgrade your acquaintances.

And that includes your work environment. If you are in a toxic work environment, find a new job! Get out of there! The longer you stay in a negative environment, the more your vibrations diminish. More importantly, the LESS able you are to believe you can create something better, or even envision it.

Toxic office environments not only steal your creativity, they steal your spirit.

8. Here is another powerful technique for upgrading your consciousness and your mindset. Every time you catch yourself thinking a negative thought, ask yourself this: “Is this what I want to create?” If it is not, immediately change the thought and replace it with one that will create what you desire!

It is a similar technique to “stand porter at your door,” and very effective because you immediately choose a NEW thought.

9. What if you have issues of believing you are not worthy of your desires? Here is my answer to that. It is your Divine Right to live a Divine Life Experience. More, you were given special gifts and talents that no other human on this planet has, and it is YOUR DUTY to develop those gifts and share them! It is not about worth, it is about your DUTY to do all that you can with what was given you.

So, the next time you have questions of worthiness, ask yourself this question: “Did the Creator of this vast Universe decide I was any less worthy than any other Divine Human? Do the messages from parents, bosses or peers who criticized me reflect the Divine Truth of who I am?”

In a recent meditation, I heard the phrase, “Don’t steal from God.” I realized that my inner self was telling me to get to work, release my gifts, shut off the TV, and honor the wonderful gifts I have been given by giving back. Recognize your spiritual source, and live from that. Be all that you can be, and you will be surprised one day to find out how much that really is!

10. Take care of your physical health, eat healthy foods that are high vibrational foods, avoid toxic foods, drinks, thoughts and behaviors. Send the message to your inner self that you are taking care of you and that you deserve optimum health. Your subconscious mind will get the message and continue to help you upgrade the outer part of your life.

BONUS TIP: Get away from the TV and the news! The majority of programs are negative, decrease your creativity, and ultimately, you have given away all that time that you could have been using to create a better life.

Let me ask you a question: How old are you? Let’s say you’re 40. That means you have been alive 350,400 hours! Now, if you watch even 2 hours of TV daily since you were let’s say 8 years old, that is 23,360 hours! That equals 11 years of a full time 40 hour a week job!

You could have used that time to do some of the following:

Get another degree

Learn a new language

Learn to play an instrument

Learn to scuba dive or sail

Learn to fly

Write that book that is inside of you

Volunteer to help others less fortunate

Climb that mountain that’s calling out to you

Create a passive income stream so you can travel to those exotic islands

Add so much more to your memory book!

Life is a journey of choices. You are the chooser. Choose to Live the life that is your Divine Birthright!

I found the book intriguing, and certainly pushed me to a new dimension and perspective. It challenges the way people go about life. It reveals a way of thinking on life that defies common approaches.

It’s called a science: “The science of getting rich”

As the author claims (and It’s easy to agree), if not the first, certainly one of the first preoccupations in life is to look for a way of getting rich. Why? When we are rich, we are free to pursue and devote to whatever in our life. Or we are not able to function at our own potential when we are of limited means. Simple and true.

The author insists on a mindset as the most important asset to getting rich. He states that whatever exists and was created came from a thought or a series of them.

For sure all that revolves around us started in somebody’s mind: a thought.

Riches can also be created by a simple thought and entertaining it, according to the author.

I am sure many, included me, dismissed this crazy concept. But, as the book is intriguing and at every sentence challenges common beliefs, I kept reading, just to find out how far this theory would be pushed.

Here’s in summary what’s about.

Firstly we got to know what we want. We know that we want to be rich. But we have to define in details what that entitles. Example: a beautiful house, made of bricks, stones, how many rooms, what color the roof, on how much land, with swimming pool, a large deck. 2 car garages… The details are important.

Don’t be afraid to be wanting too much. Keep the vision constantly on your thoughts. Because everything that revolves around you was conceived in a thought at the beginning. True?

Never mind in whatever situation you are. Your thoughts will become a reality. Your thoughts will find a way for you to materialize. That means you will reach your goal by running into ways and means to achieve it.

Of course you have to believe that you amply deserve what you are asking for and there are no barriers to stop you, because it’s yours for wanting it.

When you have this belief, you’ll find yourself easily, actively engaged in getting what you envisioned in your thoughts. Leave any doubts or your vision will falter.

Do you believe Alexander had doubts when he left the comfort of his kingdom with an army of about 30.000 and conquered the mighty Persian empire?. What about Marconi and his crazy thought (at the time) of wireless communications? Or Edison when he never gave up to his thought of an incandescent light bulb.

Moral of the story: if you can picture something in your mind to be possible, then it’s all done. You just have to start the realization. Example: you never could impress in your mind that you can fly like superman. No way your mind can entertain this thought. But if you accept a fact, your thoughts will guide you.

I don’t know about you. I simply know that thousands if not millions of people got to riches with not so out of this world means and ways. So I know the road has been traveled.

A great philosopher (if you don’t believe in his divinity), Jesus, said: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you”.

Another one of my favorite quotes, attributed to Henry Ford: “If you can or you can’t, you’re both right”.

[Blogger Note: Dripping with snark, the New York Times on August 13, 1995 derides Napoleon Hill. How appropriate. This was close to the time when the NYT would suffer its first death throes - via the Internet. 15 Years later, it is still dying.

It all reminds me of the song “Levon,” in which Elton John sings:
"He was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas day
when The New York Times said God is dead"

On January 9, 1966, the Religious News Editor, John Cogley wrote a headline:

"Religion; 'God Is Dead' Debate Widens"

On March 24, 1968 the Front Page story by Edward B. Fiske (yes, Fiske!) was:

' God Is Dead' Doctrine Losing Ground to 'Theology of Hope'

It was Time Magazine that asked the Question "Is God Dead?"

Time Magazine cover story March 24, 1968 does say "Is God Dead?"

The irony? Napoleon Hill is very much alive in spirit, often revered and always respected by almost every student of success. The same can no longer be said of The New York Times and certainly not of Time Magazine.

Perhaps "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" was doubly prophetic as 2010 draws to a close]

A LIFETIME OF RICHES The Biography of Napoleon Hill. By Michael J. Ritt Jr. and Kirk Landers. Illustrated. 241 pp. New York: Dutton. $24.95.

SUCCESS is the great American secular religion, a “drama of economic salvation,” as the historian Irvin G. Wyllie writes in “The Self-Made Man in America.” The gospel of success, as propagated over the years by authors of hundreds of inspirational books, beginning with Ben Franklin, promises salvation (wealth) through faith (ambition, perseverance) and good works (industry, frugality). Among the sturdiest toilers in the vineyard of evangelical materialism was Napoleon Hill, author of “Law of Success” (1928), “Think and Grow Rich!” (1937), “The Magic Ladder to Success” (1930) and other improving books.

Hill’s biography has now been written by Michael J. Ritt Jr., executive director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, and Kirk Landers, a journalist and freelance business writer.

Given Mr. Ritt’s ties to the Hill legacy (the Prophet died in 1970 at the age of 87), this is hardly an objective account, and, as befitting the quasi-religious overtones of the subject, the prose at times acquires the pious inflections of a Life of a Saint. But credit the authors with candidly demonstrating that Hill was no such thing.

In his unpublished autobiography, on which the authors heavily rely, Hill accorded himself a classic Horatio Alger boyhood. He was born in 1883 in the uplands of Wise County, Va., to a family that represented, he said, three generations of “ignorance, illiteracy and poverty.” But in fact Hill’s grandfather was a printer; his father became a self-taught dentist and treated his neighbors until the state licensing authorities got wind of his activities. He then enrolled in dental school at the age of 40 and went on to practice legally. Hill’s stepmother, the widow of a school principal, civilized the wild-child Napoleon, making him go to school and attend church. She also bought him a typewriter, and with it he wrote up news items for rural newspapers. Thus emerged a talent for writing that he would later apply to exhorting Americans to get rich.

Fresh out of commercial college, Hill talked himself into a job with a prominent lawyer. One weekend, the manager at a coal mine the lawyer owned got drunk and became involved in the accidental shooting of a black bellhop. With the boss away, Hill took charge, arranging to have the death covered up. As a reward, his employer made him manager of the mine at the age of only 19.

So far so good, Horatio. But Hill had congenitally itchy feet; he abandoned the mines for law school, supporting himself by composing profiles of successful people for an inspirational magazine. Unable to earn enough to pay for his law course, he moved to Washington as the magazine’s correspondent and wangled an audience with Andrew Carnegie, who, according to Hill, took a shine to him and planted with him the idea that changed his life. The steel magnate told him to interview the wealthiest men in America and assemble the secrets of their success in a book, which would be “one of the most enlightening documents ever written.” Carnegie cannily did not offer to finance the project, telling Hill that “the rewards from this labor would be far in excess of any payment he might offer,” but he did provide him with letters of introduction to fellow tycoons. And so, Hill later wrote, “the Hand of Destiny reached out to me.”

This sounds a bit too inspiring to be true. Nor was Carnegie’s advice all that original. Compendiums of interviews with great industrialists revealing the secrets of their rise were a staple of success literature. Nevertheless, Hill devoted his spare time for the next 20 years to researching the “laws” of success.

But he also had to earn a living, and in this endeavor he had rather spotty, well, success. For two years he taught advertising at the La Salle Extension University in Chicago, then left to co-found the Betsy Ross Candy Company but soon was quarreling with his partners. Hill seems to have had a complex appropriate to his first name and his stature (5 feet 6 inches). Next, he launched a correspondence course in salesmanship, which folded after America entered the Great War. Hill volunteered as a propagandist for the Wilson Administration. On Armistice Day he was struck by one of his great ideas — starting a success magazine called Hill’s Golden Rule. After a couple of years he lost the magazine in a power struggle with some of his employees, whom Hill darkly accused of a vendetta. He paid back one of the plotters by denouncing him to the F.B.I. as a German agent.

Hill regarded such setbacks as a “test of his faith,” but he was not immune to despair. After another of his business failures, he confessed, “I had spent the better portion of my life in chasing a rainbow. . . . I had begun to place myself in the category of charlatans who offer others a remedy for failure which they, themselves, cannot successfully apply.” But such moments of introspection were brief; soon Hill was off chasing rainbows. He founded another periodical that featured ads for Hill-conceived organizations like the Peptomists and the Co-Operative Club, a Rotary clone that helped its members make business contacts and find “happiness through constructive service.” (The periodical went under.)

But Hill was ever distilling his laws of success. Finally he found a self-help book publisher willing to back him. Working furiously, Hill delivered himself of his magnum opus, the eight-volume “Law of Success,” which set down his 15 principles (“A Definite Chief Aim,” “Self-Confidence,” “Habit of Saving,” “Initiative and Leadership,” “Imagination” and so on). Soon he was raking in royalties of $2,500 a month, the authors say, and he was at last able to buy his neglected wife, Florence, whose family money had bailed him out of business failures, the luxuries he had long promised her. (His letters to her during their many separations show he practiced advertising on his own wife. In one he writes, “The shining pot of gold is almost within my reach.”)

As fast as the money rolled in, he spent it, purchasing fine clothes, a Rolls-Royce and a 600-acre Xanadu in the Catskills, where he planned to establish “the world’s first University-sized Success School.” Unfortunately, the year was 1929, and eight-volume sermons on how to make millions would, as the Depression deepened, seem in bad taste. Royalties dried up, takers for his syndicated success column dwindled and the owner foreclosed on Xanadu.

Unbowed, Hill scrabbled a living by promoting his “Mental Dynamite” lecture series and editing and writing Inspiration Magazine. Through a Congressman friend, he got a job turning out public-relations materials for the Government. Hill claimed that he became a confidant of F. D. R. himself. Maybe so, but I somehow doubt that Hill coined the remark “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” as he asserted, though he was a prosperity-around-the-corner guy who believed that curing the Depression was a matter of restoring confidence. Macroeconomics has never been the strong suit of apostles of individualism.

IN 1937, with the business climate looking up and self-help primers like Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People” back in style, Hill composed his biggest hit, “Think and Grow Rich!,” which the authors say sold 20 million copies over the next 50 years (Alice Payne Hackett’s “70 Years of Best Sellers” suggests the figure was considerably lower). Newt Gingrich lists it among the books that most influenced him. By then Florence had divorced him and he was married to a younger woman of “dazzling beauty and steamy sex appeal” named Rosa Lee Beeland, who helped him write “Think and Grow Rich!” and later produced a self-help book of her own, “How to Attract Men and Money.” She spoke with authority: she took Hill for all he had when they eventually divorced.

In his remaining years Hill advised companies with “labor troubles” (union organizers), married a good woman and buckled down to merchandising his books and success courses, with the backing of a wealthy disciple, the insurance executive W. Clement Stone, who made the Master’s books required reading for his agents. From Hill’s inspiring life I have gleaned another Law of Success: Don’t waste your time chasing a rainbow. Package it and sell it to others. Then you’ll find a pot of gold.

Have you ever seen those Get-Rich-Quick offers on the internet?

I am sure you have.

They promise wealth and riches in no time and with little effort.

Do you really believe they work?

Well, I do not, I have never believed it and I never will.

Sure, it may be possible to get rich quick, e.g. by winning the lottery, being lucky in stock trading or break the bank in a gambling casino. Opportunities of this kind are real but far away from a sustainable job to make a living from. And I would assume the same for get-rich-quick-schemes related to online marketing though I am convinced that there are equitable offers among them.

So why do people still fall for these scams? It is the money, of course. It lets greed take over and eliminate even the last bit of reason. Bad luck for those who buy it: coincidental it is the money they will never earn. The only profiteers are these who sell the get-rich-quick-schemes.

Get-Rich-Quick-Scam protection

Now, wouldn’t it be great if there was an antidote or vaccination to prevent people from falling for get-rich-quick-scams? Well, the good news is: it is already there. To be precise, it has been there for more than 70 years – since 1937.

In March 1937 a man published a book that sold like hot cakes from the beginning. And sales did not stop for the next seven decades so that 30 million copies (the data varies, some say even 60 million copies) have been sold to date worldwide. The book is entitled “Think And Grow Rich”, authored by Napoleon Hill.

“Think And Grow Rich” is an exemplary anti-get-rich-quick-book for various reasons:

it is based upon interviews with, and analysis of over 500 rich people back then

all of them have acquired their fortunes over years or rather decades

planning and persistence are indispensable constituent parts of the formula

Napoleon Hill has proven that he walks his talk. It took him 20 years to interview and analyze the 500+ individuals to find a formula of getting rich that could be applied by the average person

many successful people, among them real estate tycoon John Mc Grath, multimillionaires Dobbins, Pettman, and W. Clement Stone, consider(ed) Napoleon Hill’s “Think And Grow Rich” a serious wealth-creating tool

“Think And Grow Rich” in a nutshell:

You can grow rich by your own strength. But not quick. What you need is the absolute desire to succeed, faith in yourself, a sound plan, imagination, knowledge, persistence and some friends to support you. And you have to be willing to render service in return: work – or rather hard work.

With that in mind it is up to you to take action and do the right thing. Whatever it may be in your case. Now you should be prepared to laugh about those “How You Can Make 5 Gazillion Dollars Online In 3 Seconds Without a Computer!”-Websites and continue to do your work, step by step, to earn your deserved riches.

“There is no substitute for persistence. The person who makes persistence his watch-word, discovers that “Old Man Failure” finally becomes tired, and makes his departure.” Napoleon Hill

13. The Sixth Sense

Epilogue:How to Outwit the 6 Ghost of Fear

I tried to Google it… HA!

There are more answers of what people think “THE SECRET” is than there are references of it in the book (over a hundred, I might add). I mean I’ve read everything I could get my eyes on. People claim it is desire, a plan, a mastermind group, persistence, imagination, a combination of a few, the law of attraction, the subconscious mind, taking action, and then there was the obvious, the title of the book, “Think and Grow Rich.” Another person stated that your instinct will become so natural to you that your actions will lead you to your desires and that there really wasn’t any secret to be had, and so on and so on. Whatever the answer was, it has to include of these! There was no denying that millions of lives have been changed by this book. I thought maybe if people we’re just simply following the instructions in the book, they were practicing the secret without really knowing exactly how it happen. In all honesty I was searching for a short-cut.

Now, what if the answer was different for everyone? What if you had to read and experience it for yourself? We all know how it’s literally impossible it is to have an experience of riding a bike without actually riding one right? And so in the words of Napoleon Hill, I was trying to get something, for nothing.

Hill also said in the author’s preface that, “It has not been directly named, for it seems to work more successfully when it is merely uncovered and left in sight, where THOSE WHO ARE READY and SEARCHING FOR IT may pick it up. The secret to which I refer cannot be had without a price, although the price is far less than it’s value. It cannot be had at any price by those who are not intentionally searching for it. It cannot be given away, and it cannot be purchased for money, for the reason that it comes in two parts. One part is already in possession of those who are ready for it.

Before the first Chapter Hill writes, “As a final word of preparation, before you begin the next chapter, may I offer you one brief suggestion which may provide a clue by which the Carnegie secret may be recognized? It is this: ALL ACHIEVEMENT, ALL EARNED RICHES, HAVE THEIR BEGINNING IN AN IDEA! If you are ready for the secret, you already possess one half of it, therefore, you will readily recognize the other half the moment it reaches your mind.”

Why doesn’t Hill just come out and tell us what the secret is? Why did he suggest the reader “READ THE BOOK 3 TIMES” and “IF YOU DO, AFTER THAT YOU WON’T WANT TO STOP READING IT AGAIN AND AGAIN “Please pay close attention to what he says, “IF YOU ARE READY TO PUT IT TO USE, YOU WILL RECOGNIZE THIS SECRET AT LEAST ONCE IN EVERY CHAPTER. I WISH I MIGHT FEEL PRIVILEGED TO TELL YOU, (NOT WHAT IT IS, BUT…) HOW YOU WILL KNOW IF YOU ARE READY, BUT THAT WOULD DEPRIVE YOU OF MUCH OF THE BENEFIT YOU WILL RECEIVE WHEN YOU MAKE THE DISCOVERY IN YOUR OWN WAY.”

I believe that over the last year I’ve figured out the central principle that will lead to true prosperity in life—the “Secret” as some people have called it. Seeing as how I’ve been on my annual vacation with my family, this is all sort of stream-of-consciousness, but I thought it important enough to share even before my ideas are fully developed. Obviously, there will be a lot more to discuss as it relates to this, but here are some basic thoughts on this success principle.

I’ve been reading one of the most influential books of my life: Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. This 1937 classic contains the principles that led people like Andrew Carnegie, Charles M. Schwab, Thomas Edison, and many others, to great wealth and success. As a young man, Napoleon Hill met the steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who instilled in him his most important business teachings. Over the course of twenty years, Hill interviewed about five hundred of the most successful businessmen and leaders in the U.S. and the world, to understand more about the common beliefs that helped lead to their great success.

What these 500 individuals had in common is also what forms the foundation for the newer book and now movie, The Secret. While they give a decent introduction to a very powerful idea, I feel that the practitioners in that film greatly oversimplify this principle which many of the world’s rich and powerful share.

After talking at length with my sister about the concepts in Hill’s Think and Grow Rich—what some call mind over matter, visualization, the “Law of Attraction”—we decided that the most effective way to describe the “Carnegie secret” succinctly is this:

You become that which you think about most.

You also attract the things and accomplish the goals that you think about most. But the first step to great success is to know specifically what you want out of life: financially, personally, socially, etc. In other words, what you occupy your mind with most prominently will eventually, in one way or another shape your reality. I find that most people I talk to, even though I love many of them dearly, don’t really know what they want to achieve in life. But if you think about it critically, the principle fits with most of what we know about life. People who concentrate solely on achieving some sort of success may fail ten times before they become a great success seemingly “overnight,” but those who don’t fill their heads with grand aspirations rarely see great success, and those who stop concentrating on their highest goals and start believing that they can’t achieve their aspirations eventually give up.

So we can see how this works both positively and negatively. Once you start telling yourself that you can’t do something, you’re right! So be careful that you don’t concentrate your thoughts on what you don’t want out of life, because eventually you will attract those things to you. This even explains hypochondriacs and placebo effects. The mind works hard to align belief with reality. Instead phrase all of your goals positively, believe sincerely that you can achieve what you want in life, and fill your mind with vivid visualizations of what it will be like when you’ve actually attained your goals.

Hill says that definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement. You may eke by with a decent living without any definite major purpose for your life, but you will never excel without concrete, specific goals. Hill says that financial goals in particular should be specific, measurable, and timely. Set specific goals for how much money you want to earn, specifically by what date, for example. But the example holds true for any sort of wealth, not just monetary. And most importantly, be clear and realistic about what what you will give in exchange for that wealth, what value you intend to share with the world in exchange for your success.

Figure out what your purpose is. Decide specifically what you want in life and what you are willing to give in return for it. Visualize your success and repeat to yourself often what you intend to achieve. Then back it up with massive action, and you’re certain to reach the heights of success, wealth, and influence.

Otherwise you’ll have to settle for what falls in your lap. Sometimes that’s decent, but you can’t say you never got a chance if you don’t know specifically what you want out of life: what you want to BE, DO and HAVE. When you know what you want, you will be prepared to recognize and take advantage of the opportunities that life presents to you.

(Oh P.S. the title is a silly geek reference to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy!)

In his all time best selling book, Think And Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill mentions in his first chapter that throughout the book he will be referring many times to The Carnegie Secret. He said he would not tell you what that secret is, but when you are ready, it will jump off the page and into your brain. He said, When the Student is ready – the master will appear. The doors will open. The lights will turn green. The ideas will come. The money will come. The people will be there to help you.

Since 1970 we have been teaching the principles of success that Andrew Carnegie commissioned Napoleon Hill to study and share with the world. Napoleon Hill spent his entire lifetime researching the most successful people of all times from around the world.

Many, many times in our classes, workshops, talks, rallies and in our Master Mind Alliance Success Club meetings we have asked this question to those in our audience who had read the book Think and Grow Rich,

What is The Carnegie Secret that Napoleon Hill referred to in his book?

We got all kinds of guesses and some answers that were somewhat close.

HERE IS ——- THE CARNEGIE SECRET

1. Have A Definite Major Purpose.

What is the most important thing you would like to accomplish in your lifetime? Try to define it in one paragraph, even if you have to keep rewriting it a hundred times until it gets as clear as possible. It has to be the most important thing in your life. Mahatma Gandhi’s definite major purpose was to win independence for India from their British rulers. He succeeded. Dr. Martin Luther King’s was equality and the end of oppression for black people. Doctor Jonas Salk’s was to find the cure and end for polio. Thomas Edison’s was the incandescent light bulb. What is yours?

If you don’t currently have what you feel is a definite major purpose, then have a definite major purpose to find your definite major purpose.

It has to be something you want so bad that you think about it all of the time.

2. Be Willing To Stake Your Entire Existence On Achieving It.

Don’t Quit. There Are Many Starters In Life, But Very Few Finishers – When The Going Gets Tough They Quit. A person with a definite major purpose never gives up – no matter how long and tough the road is; instead, they become more determined. Jack London was rejected over 600 times before he finally sold his first piece of writing. Thomas Edison actually failed over 9,999 times before he perfected the incandescent light bulb, and over 5,000 times before he perfected the world’s first phonograph record player. There will be times when everything in you will tell you to quit – to stop trying, but if you hang in there, eventually, you will – you must succeed. Quitters never win and winners never quit.

Persistence is the power to hold on in spite of everything – to endure. It’s the ability to face defeat repeatedly without giving up–to push on even in the face of great difficulty or danger. Persistence means taking pains to overcome every obstacle, to do all that is necessary to reach your goals. You win, because you refuse to become discouraged by your defeats. Those who conquer are those who endure.

3. Keep Intensifying Your Desire.

There are many “firemen” in life that will come along and try to put your fire of desire out. They will give you all kinds of reasons why your idea or goal won’t work and tell you to give it up, forget it, or tell you “You can’t do it.” You have to become an Arsonist. An arsonist sets fires. Every morning when you wake up you have to re-light and re-build the intensity of your fire of desire. You have to eat it, sleep it, walk it, talk it, and concentrate on it until it becomes a red-hot flaming, burning, obsessional desire that will eventually mow down all of the opposition you will face throughout each day. If you don’t, your Sizzle of desire will fizzle down to nothing. I’m not suggesting that you stop talking to or seeing your family and friends – what I’m saying is to keep focused day and night, seven days a week. This will bring into play: THE LAW OF HARMONIOUS ATTRACTION. Your burning desire becomes a magnet. You will attract that which you need; the ideas and plans, the money you need, and the people you need to help you. They will eventually gravitate toward your desire.

4. Have Bulldog Determination And Perseverance That Will Eventually Mow Down All Opposition.

Expect lots of problems, adversities, and discouragement along the way. Go around it – go over it – go under it – or dig a hole through it – but don’t ever turn back. Make your Definite Major Purpose the dominating thought in your mind. It is a known fact that people who have had great achievement – formed the habit of making an “obsession” of their Definite Major Purpose. Andrew Carnegie said to put all of your eggs in one basket and then watch the basket. Andrew Carnegie’s definite major purpose, which he wrote down at an early age and kept in his desk, was to earn as much money as he can in life and then, in the end, to set up the Carnegie Foundation to give it all away to worthy causes. Even after his death long ago, the Carnegie Foundation is still giving away millions every year to help mankind.

I have been teaching The Science of Success Achievement Course since 1970. There were many times when I taught the course to as many as ten different groups per week. Some in major hotels, some in large corporate training rooms, in the YMCA, in hundreds of real estate and insurance offices, in prisons, rehab centers, and for many sales and marketing groups of people.

In all of my classes, (There were ten separate 4-hour classes to the course,) I always told my students at the end of the first class – “For your homework this week, I want you to read the first four chapters of Think And Grow Rich (I always had stacks of the book there to sell them.) As you read each page, write a list of all of the things the author is telling you to do and the things he is telling you not to do. Then, I want you to carry that list with you every day and keep reviewing your list and keep doing the things the author told you to do. And then come back to class #2 next week and tell the class about the list you made, what actions you took as a result of reading the book, and what results you got.”

At the beginning of the class on the following week I would always start out by asking – By a show of hands, how many of you read the first four chapters of Think And Grow Rich? About 2% would raise their hands. The rest didn’t take the time to read it. Then I would ask the 2% How many of you read the first four chapters and made the list I told you to make of all of the things the author told you to do? Usually about three hands went up. I asked each of them – How many items do you have on your list of the things the author told you to do? The first person said three. The second person said nine. The third person said – 90 items

I asked the person who had ninety on her list to come to the front of the classroom.

I said to the others – You people paid good money to take this course because you wanted to achieve greater success. How can you expect the results you hoped for if you aren’t willing to take notes and to put in practice what you are learning?

Then I had the lady read from her list of 90 items. And the class was surprised at how powerful and important the things on her list were.

I asked the class – How many of you are speed reader? All kinds of hands went up. Then I told them about an incident when I was at a party and someone asked me what I do for a living. I told him that I teach a course based around the book Think And Grow Rich. He said, “That’s a book that we teach from at our speed reading school.” Then I asked him, “What were the greatest lessons you learned from the book?” He tried to think and then said, “I don’t remember that book so well.” I later found out that he was a speed-reading instructor. I thought to myself – There’s a guy that can read 10,000 words a minute and remember nothing.

Think And Grow Rich is so powerful that it’s the kind of book you have to read very slowly and carefully, many times until it becomes a part of your life and habits. I have been reading the book every year since 1970. Each year I pull it back off the shelf and let it fire me up for the achievement of my new goals for the year.

There’s so much hype on the internet these days, regarding every subject you can imagine; even Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich doesn’t escape. When people claim Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is the best self help book in the world, can you believe this is true, does it really work or is it just yet more internet hype?

The statistics about Napoleon Hill’s best selling book can’t be relied on either because many websites say that 30 million copies of Think and Grow Rich have been sold yet other sources claim it is more like 60 million. Some of the book reviews say Think and Grow Rich is a book about money? If they think that, then the reviewers obviously haven’t read Napoleon Hill’s classic work!

So; the question is; “Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich – Does it Work?” The only way I can answer this question is by sharing with you, some of my own life experiences. To illustrate this, I will need to explain a little about my background, if you will be tolerant with me for a few moments.

Having come from a broken home, I lived in bed-sits and rooming houses until I was about 25 years old. This was the time when I got married and tried to settle down. Not long after getting married I went into business with a couple of guys I knew.

At first the business went pretty well. We won a number of decent contracts and started to make some money. However, my partners soon bought flashy cars and announced they could pick up more business at the golf course than they could by sitting in an office. It wasn’t long before the company was spending far more money than we were earning.

At about the same time I discovered my wife was having an affair with one of our employees. Can you believe it; when I confronted the guy and sacked him, he took me to the industrial tribunal for unfair dismissal.

This was just about the lowest point my life ever descended to. With my company collapsing I was at loggerheads with my business partners. My home life was crumbling and I started to have panic attacks and was seriously contemplating suicide. I very soon became homeless; jobless and broke with massive debts; this inevitably led to me rapidly becoming friendless too.

It was about 20 years since I’d had any regular contact with my father; I felt that he was part of the “conspiracy” against me, plotting to make me miserable. However, running out of options, I decided to look him up and he was none too pleased to see me. By this time he was remarried, with a young family and to come across me in such a wretched state was an embarrassment to him.

He fed me and let me stay for a week and on the first night, gave me a tatty little book called “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. He said, “Read this, you never know, it may change your life!”

With nothing else to do, I spent the next seven days in my room reading the book over and over again and things started to make sense to me. Since that date, I dip into Think and Grow Rich just about every day for inspiration.

After the week of reading Napoleon Hill’s little book there was no going back to despair, self pity and panic attacks. I began developing positive thoughts that turned into strong burning desires. This gave me hope and faith in myself which gave me back my self esteem.

It wasn’t long before I secured a good job and my massive credit card debt was replaced by a manageable loan. So, is this the end of the story, settled down at last? No chance!

The company I worked for was taken over by a multinational conglomerate and in their program of streamlining the business; I was destined for the scrapheap, yet again. Once I heard redundancies were on the way, I didn’t wait for the axe to fall in the hope of getting severance pay; I gave my notice and declared I was going into business on my own.

The next six months were probably the most challenging I’ve ever faced in my life. Some folks were a great help to me and I will be for ever indebted to them. Others people were deceitful and took advantage of someone so vulnerable. Despite all the tribulations, the business became successful.

What was different from just a few years earlier? How did I prosper this time with greater challenges than those that broke me before? What had changed? What was different?

It was my ATTITUDE that had changed! With my new positive mental attitude Instead of fearing challenges, I welcomed them!

The business I started in 1984 is still flourishing today. We have challenges and setbacks of course but for more than 25 years the inspiration Napoleon Hill gave me in the pages of Think and Grow Rich steered me through.

Did reading Napoleon Hill’s book change my life for the better? Yes, it most certainly helped me. Was it a one off ‘light bulb moment’ that turned my life round in an instant? No, of course it didn’t.

Reading Think and Grow Rich over and over for a whole week was definitely a pivotal moment in my life. However, it was only one small first step in the right direction after I had been running full tilt in the wrong direction for years. Napoleon Hill opened my eyes to a whole spectrum of information and thought processes that I didn’t even know existed.

So to return to my opening question, “Napoleon Hill; Think and Grow Rich – Does it Work? Well it unquestionably did for me! It gave me hope and faith that life could get better and it still does every day.

After Roy rebuilt his life using the inspiration and teachings from within Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, he realised not everyone who reads the book actually understands it. If you don’t comprehend the principles Napoleon Hill puts forward in this book, how can you expect to gain from it.

Roy therefore decided to train people the Napoleon Hill Think And Grow Rich “way” without them having to decipher the books secrets themselves.

One of the first things Napoleon Hill teaches is “definiteness of purpose.” Basically this means, to succeed you must have a specific action plan. An exact course of action you can just follow to generate the future you desire.

Roy decided to create a simple action plan that anyone can easily follow to immediately start to change their life in any direction they desire. His first priority was to make sure the plan can be implemented in a few hours rather than the weeks, months or years it “normally” takes to understand the principles found within Think and Grow Rich.

Consequently, Roy created an interactive, video based training course. This course is so simple to understand, anyone can follow it to use the teachings of Napoleon Hill to realise their dreams.

You can get full details of the interactive course by Clicking Here

As Napoleon Hill said, “Your life Right Now is a direct result of decisions and thoughts you’ve had and made in the past.”

Who knows, you may be the next big success story.

Learn “Think and Grow Rich” Hidden Secret – Master the Universal Law of Thinking

By Nicole Matoushek

This best selling book Think and Grow Rich written by Napolean Hill was the end result of interviewing and researching over 500 extremely successful men and women in an effort to discover the exact method or science per say, they used in order to create their massive wealth and success–other people worked hard, so why and how did these select group of people achieve massive success while others did not.

Included among these 500 men and women that Napolean Hill followed and researched were Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Carnegie, Theodore Roosevelt, Charles Schwab, Alexander Graham Bell, John D. Rockefeller, along with many others.

Napolean Hill’s research took over a decade and his findings were of course recorded in this famous book “Think and Grow Rich.

What Napolean Hill discovered is that thought precedes everything. That there is a universal source of power which we can use in order to attract that which we desire in order to manifest our goals. Those people who organize their lives and their thoughts along lines of this power, achieve results in unexpected efficiency and ease, with far greater results than those who do not consciously use their thoughts to achieve great results.

The essence of Think and Grow Rich is in Napoleon Hill’s statement: “Everything your mind can conceive, you can achieve”. Your thoughts determine your actions or non-actions, and these become your reality. By evaluating your current thoughts and results, and changing them, directing them towards a purpose, you can in turn design your own destiny. You can choose new results. it all starts with the mind. Proper planning, a definite action plan and vision are all required, but all success starts with your thoughts.

Now, in Think and Grow Rich Napolean Hill explicitly teaches us that you need to be very clear about what it is that you want. You must be specific, and even set a definite amount of time or time limit on achieving it. Additionally, an action plan is required. You cannot achieve significant results without a plan or action.

Then, in Think and Grow Rich the book states, that after you have formulated your goals and your plan, you need to visualise it. In this practice you should use all the senses you can use to simulate the reality of already having achieved your goal, act as if you already have it. You also must believe that you can acquire it! This involves emotion, and it creates a true desire to achieve it.

Additionally, in Think and Grow Rich you need to learn and apply new skills so that you can achieve your goals. Success does not occur unless you work at it with an unwavering faith that you will achieve that which you desire. You Everyone comes up against barriers and hurdles along the way. You need to rise above the challenges and keep moving towards your goal, and never give up. Persistence and determination are key and vital to your success.

Finally, in Think and Grow Rich you must create the proper attitude and mindset and believe that you can achieve anything you desire. You must live as if you have already achieved your goals.

Hmmmm this stuff is incredible! I know the answer to the above sentence… do you?

Nicole Matoushek, MPH, PT has authored three books “Acquired Hope: A Journey of Advanced Recovery and Empowerment”, “365 Days of Abundant Hope” and “What I Forgot The Day I Was Born”. All are available on amazon. Her books have been featured in the New York Review of Books, the New York Times paper and she has been author at L.A. Times Festival of Books.

Nicole lives each day in hope and is passionately dedicated to helping others succeed in obtaining abundant health, wealth and a fuller life!
