Breaking Through Your Barriers to Success

By Wil Dieck

One of the greatest sources of stress can be barriers that block your success. On of the best ways to relieve stress is by blasting though those obstacles.

So let me ask, what barriers are blocking your success? What obstacles are thwarting your progress toward your goals and keeping you from fulfilling your life’s purpose? Once you figure this out you are a lot closer to overcoming stress and moving on with your life.

Barriers can be physical, mental or emotional and can come in all shapes and sizes. On the program Pitchman, Tom Motosko explained how he had been a pitchman like the late Billy Mays. He was successful enough that he flew his own airplane from show to show. In 1996 his plane crashed and he lost both his legs from the knees down. Talk about being stressed!

Now some people would have seen this as an insurmountable barrier. Some people would have curled up and died, at least emotionally. Not Tom. Tom saw his condition as an opportunity to use his talent for invention. While doing rehab exercises on the floor of his father’s Youngstown home he saw their neighbor doing yard work and the idea for the Awesome Auger came to him. It is now one of the biggest selling products on TV today. Talk about developing his stress coping skills!

Failed attempts are often seen as barriers. The thing to remember is that experiencing a failure doesn’t make you a failure. If you want some examples of this read about Henry Ford or Thomas Edison. They failed many times but people don’t talk about their failures they remember their successes.

The reason people are successful is that they have learned to break through barriers, most imposed on them by their own minds. Once they break though their barriers they find that they have gone a long way toward relieving stress in their lives. The good news is that you can use what they learned to help you overcome your self-created obstacles.

Today I want to give you 8 ways for breaking through your self imposed barriers and overcoming stress in your life.

1. Decide on your definite major purpose in life. Why do you need a definite purpose in life? Well, let’s say you decided to go to the airport to take a trip. What would the ticket agent ask you? They would ask, “Where would you like to go?”

What would the ticket agent think if you said, “Oh I don’t care, just give me a ticket to anywhere.”?

Well you and I both know that they would think you were either crazy or on drugs and they would probably soon call security to take you to a padded cell. Although nobody will take you away to a padded cell if you don’t have a definite major purpose in life, other people will always make your decisions for you because you don’t have any idea of where you want to go. That’s why you need to decide your definite major purpose in life.

To figure out your definite major purpose decide what kind of stuff turns you on or makes your blood rush through your veins. What gets you excited enough to wake up in the morning ready for the day? Once you figure this out you’ll understand your definite major purpose.

The great thing is that once you have defined your definite major purpose your mind will start to focus on achieving what it is you want. In fact it will help bring the forces of the universe to helping you get what you want.

2. Know what your goals are. After you’ve decided on your DMP in life you then will want to set goals that will bring you toward it. If you wanted to build a house what’s the first thing you’d do? You’d make a plan of course!

Just like you can’t build a house that will last without a plan you can’t build a fulfilling life without one either. That’s what goals are for. They help you decide on the steps needed to achieve your definite major purpose in life.

One last thing about your goals, write them out and put them where you can see them every day.

3. Visualize your goals as already accomplished. Earl Nightingale, the late Dean of Personal Development was fond of saying, “You are what you think about.” What he was telling us is that we become exactly what we visualize, or image ourselves to be. So one way of making our goals a reality is visualizing them as already accomplished.

How does visualization help us achieve our goals? In his great book, Psycho-Cybernetics , Dr. Maxwell Maltz says “Whether we realize it or not, each of us carries about with us a mental blueprint or picture of ourselves.” Then he says “you will ‘act like’ the sort of person that you conceive yourself to be.” What he’s saying is that your subconscious minds will steer you toward your goals in the same manner GPS guides a Tomahawk cruse missile. Just like the missile follows the GPS map, your subconscious will follow the guidance of your well visualized goals.

4. Build a success journal. Sometimes when things get tough you can get blinded to your abilities by the barriers in front of you. So write down everything you accomplish as you move toward your goal. Also write down other things you’ve accomplished. Did you ever get an “A” in class? Did you graduate high school? Did you get an award for something you’ve done? Can you swim? Each time you successfully accomplish anything, write it in your success journal. This will help reinforce your trust in yourself. This in turn will help put you in charge of your journey to success.

5. Decide that everything is feedback. No matter if your results are positive or not, label everything that happens as you move toward your goals as feedback. When you do this you can step back and have a more objective view of what is happening. What you’ll find is that sometimes things that seem to be positive are not quite as positive as they first appeared. On the other hand, things that appear negative can actually be excellent course corrections. These can cause you to work harder on alternative plans for your future endeavors, giving you alternatives should the unexpected happen.

The other thing that labeling everything as feedback can do for you is make you more flexible. Being too rigid on something can be counterproductive. In order to succeed, we sometimes have to change our approach completely. So seeing everything as feedback can help you find a solution.

6. Get a coach or find a mentor. Tiger Woods was a golf child prodigy and is arguably the best golfer in the history of the sport. But his swing coach, the late Butch Harmon, guided him to even higher levels of play. Everyone can use a coach. A coach can see weaknesses you can’t. A good coach has already done what you want to do and can help you get to where you want to go faster. If you want to save time and accomplish more, get a coach!

7. Be persistent and never ever give up. Nothing has ever been solved or accomplished by giving up. Vince Lombardi said it best: “Winners never quit and quitters never win!” As Stan Lee puts it, “Nuff said.”

8. Be willing to start over. Sometimes, despite all your best efforts, your goal will elude you. In this case you’ll need to start again, to rebuild from the ground up. Just keep in mind tip number 5 and you’ll do just fine. While it’s a setback, it’s not the end of your dream. Just remember, with a little more effort, a slight course adjustment and some hard work, you can accomplish your dreams!

There you have it 8 tips for breaking through barriers and overcoming stress in your life. Just remember, there is no overnight success. It involves a lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifices. But if you use these tips and keep positive people around you to help, I’m certain you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. This will be one of the best ways to relieve stress you’ll ever learn.
